Comprehensive programs make mentoring easy
Learning Together supplies a turnkey package of materials and training, so it’s easy for community organizations to set up shop in schools, libraries, community centers and other locations. Everything needed, down to highlighters and self-stick notes, is included in our purple carry box. While this flexibility allows you to customize when and where to use our programs, coordinator training, tutor preparation and prescriptive lessons ensure that the programs maintain their integrity whatever the implementation model.

Learning Together can suggest guidelines for selecting tutees using local or state assessment scores and teacher recommendations; for programs with limited access to school records, we provide a simple, free Assessment Kit to facilitate placement. We also can offer advice and printed materials to help with selecting and recruiting community tutors. We send highly qualified trainers to prepare program coordinators, who then train tutors. Through direct instruction and role play, tutors learn literacy and math skills and practice applying appropriate strategies, giving them the skill and confidence to lead their tutees through each lesson.

Schools and community organizations have successfully implemented our programs with a variety of adult mentors:
  • A unique partnership between corporations, private organizations and schools in North Carolina uses senior volunteers to mentor second and third graders in reading.  The tutors find great satisfaction working with children and the children adore their special tutors.
  • A Texas district found the perfect match with corporate volunteers. The corporation was looking for a leadership opportunity for its employees; the schools were looking for tutors.  Several modifications were made, including the use of a job-share arrangement between the volunteers.  Initially, both people in the job share came for tutorials so that bonding with the tutee could occur.  Later on, the volunteers alternated conducting lessons.
  • Schools in Iowa have looked to various sources within their communities for volunteers:  parents, retired teachers, corporate volunteers and university students. Being involved with Reading Together has benefitted all mentors emotionally, socially and even professionally.
